British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of IS following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces who took part in this operation for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were numerous British troops stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
